Archaeological testing of proposed dwelling-houses at Backlane, Carlingford, Co. Louth, was carried out on 24 March 1997. The site lies to the east of Backlane inside the town wall and to the west of two medieval houses located in Newry Street. Excavation of four test-trenches indicated that the site was devoid of archaeological stratigraphy. Boulder clay was evident quite close to the surface and it was obvious that the site had previously been ploughed, thereby destroying any material which may originally have been present.
