A programme of archaeological testing took place at this site during July 1997. Three trenches were mechanically excavated to below the level of natural deposits. Trench 1 was located in the grain-store to the north-west of the property, while Trenches 2 and 3 were located within the main store. Excavation of Trench 1 revealed a concrete floor overlying a dark grey-to-black context which contained a significant amount of industrial debris, including scraps of shoes and bottles all dating to the 20th century, while below this lay the natural deposits, which are a reddish-ochre in colour.
Excavation of Trenches 2 and 3 revealed a similar stratigraphy, although in Trench 2 a crudely constructed stone-filled drain was identified extending east–west. This drain was cut into a black layer (similar to that identified in Trench 1) containing china and dairy crock. There was not the same concentration of industrial debris in either Trench 2 or 3 as in Trench 1, although more bone was evident.
As no artefacts or archaeological features were identified within the trenches excavated, this area of the site may be considered to have been archaeologically resolved.
