Editor’s note: The following is an amendment to the summary of this site by Professor Woodman which was published in Excavations 1996, 67–8.
It has been pointed out to me that my historical background to the preliminary report of excavations at Killuragh in 1996 may have inadvertently misrepresented certain aspects of earlier work at the site.
After consultation with both the landowner, Mr B. O’Neill, and Ms J. O’Shaughnessy, I would wish to amend the 1996 report in two areas:
1. It should be noted that two of the three samples of human remains submitted for 14C dating came from Mr O’Neill’s exploration of the cave, while one came from Ms O’Shaughnessy’s investigation.
2. There were no archaeological artefacts apparent in the surface of the spoil-heaps when Mr O’Neill began his examination of that material.
