Following an earlier assessment carried out in this area, which is along the line of the proposed N20/N21 Adare–Annacotty road scheme, it was recommended that archaeological monitoring of topsoil-stripping take place. This was undertaken in September 1997.
Two trenches were stripped under archaeological supervision, both measuring approximately 18m x 20m. The ploughsoil was removed down to a yellowish-grey sandy clay containing a large amount of gravel, which represents subsoil in this area. The ploughsoil contained some modern pottery but was archaeologically sterile. No features were found to be cut into the subsoil and the conclusion, therefore, was that the area of the trenches was of no archaeological significance.
