The site, located towards the south-eastern side of Mungret Street near Mungret Gate within the medieval walled area of the Irishtown, was tested in advance of a development which will front onto Mungret Street. On the OS 1840 plan, there is a row of houses, one of which, No. 28, survived up to relatively recently. Four cuttings were opened by mechanical digger: all had loose rubble fill. Serious flooding occurred at approx. 2m below street level.
Nothing of archaeological interest was noted in any of the cuttings. It would appear that the entire area of the proposed development was cellared. The location of the walls exposed corresponded to the layout of the houses marked on the OS 1840 plan.
