Test-trenching was carried out on 28 August 1997 to comply with a condition of planning permission. The development site is located outside the north wall of the medieval town and is close to a graveyard which contains a disused church.
A 62m-long trench was dug around the perimeter of the house and a 22m-long trench was dug from the house to the septic tank and percolation areas.
A shallow layer of topsoil overlay the limestone bedrock in the area of the house, while at the septic tank location a 0.3m-deep layer of topsoil overlay undisturbed brown soil and subsoil above the bedrock, which was at a depth of 1.3m.
The trenches contained no archaeological features.
