1997:310 - KILKENNY: 8 William Street, Kilkenny

Following on an original site assessment carried out by Jo Moran (Excavations 1996, 60), monitoring of groundworks for the first of two blocks of townhouses took place on 18/11/1997, under the same licence. The original assessment had found medieval deposits at a level of c.1.7m below present ground level and it was stated in the planning application that foundations would be maintained at a level of 1m below ground level. This level was exceeded owing to the fact that ‘ground conditions were found to be too soft to sustain strip foundations at a depth of 1m as....shown on the elevation...’, and disturbance of medieval deposits did occur in the area of the more easterly of the two blocks. The National Monuments Service was contacted and further groundworks ceased until a revised foundation plan could be submitted for approval. No further work took place in 1997.
