The planned development of this site was for three new townhouses. The site is within the zone of archaeological potential as defined in the Urban Archaeological Survey for Kilkenny. The UAS plan shows that the line of the city wall crossed this site; however, no evidence for this was found during the testing.
On 6 January 1997 two test-trenches were excavated by JCB across the site. Although several post-medieval features, including one side of a late north-south-oriented ditch, were uncovered, no significant medieval stratigraphy was present. Several fragments of medieval pottery were found, but these were only seen in the disturbed deposits.
The excavation of the foundation trenches was also monitored. Although several refuse-pits and a brick-lined cesspit were found, these were clearly post-medieval in date. The north-south-aligned post-medieval ditch is seen as a drainage or possible property boundary feature. No further archaeological excavation was recommended, and the development went ahead.
