Ahead of restoration work at Hutchinson's Mill the fabric of the present building was looked over briefly and three trenches were cut outside to look for indications of earlier watermills (the site lies close to Kells Priory).

The present mill is large. It appears to have been built in the early 19th century as a three-storey T-shaped structure with a single wheel, but to have been extended into the hillside and into the river, provided with a second wheel, and raised a further two storeys after 1840. No indications of earlier building, landscaping, or settlement activity were found at the site.
