The site is located at the northern end of Nurney village and in the immediate vicinity of a nunnery site (SMR 27:25) and the site of a castle (SMR 27:26). A church and graveyard (SMR 27:27) are located a short distance to the south of the site. Trial-trenching was undertaken on 30 April in compliance with a condition of planning in respect of the expansion of an existing shop and construction of a small petrol station forecourt.
One trial-pit and six trenches were excavated by machine within the area of the proposed development. No structures, deposits or finds of archaeological interest were uncovered and the only disturbance caused to the subsoil was by services to the existing buildings on the site. It was recommended that no further archaeological involvement was required at the site.
