Archaeological monitoring was carried out at the site of the Hewlett Packard plant during the course of continued development of the site and the construction of a carpark. The area stripped was c. 50m x 50m. The work was carried out from 25 to 28 November 1997.
The topsoil was removed to a depth of 0.3m to a layer of yellow subsoil using a large-toothed earth remover. Nothing archaeological was removed during this phase of the monitoring.
One small investigation was carried out to the east of the site monitored. The area contained burnt topsoil, burnt wood and burnt and unburnt animal bone. An abattoir had previously stood here and as a result the area of burning was considered to have been modern and of no archaeological significance.
