A 180m length of gas-pipe was laid in a trench 1.1m deep and 0.5m wide along the western half of Main Street and the southern half of Mill Street. It follows an L-shaped plan that links up with other sections of pipe laid previously outside this area.
Monitoring took place from 3 to 14 November 1997. The route chosen on Main Street runs alongside and at a similar depth to a pre-existing modern water main. Towards the eastern end, a trench-like feature c. 0.25mm in width was observed running across and beneath the gas-pipe trench. No dating evidence was forthcoming. One sherd of 13th/14th-century 'local ware' and several sherds of 17th-century and later pottery were recovered from the backfill covering the water main. The route along Mill Street exposed pre-existing gutter cobbling below the modern surface, and cut through a lengthy outcropping of shale that rises to a depth of 0.6mm.
