Monitoring of the hand-excavation of foundations for a small extension, measuring 8m by 5m, lying to the rear of the 'McGrane House' was undertaken between 24 and 26 February 1997. The foundation trenches, which measured 1m in width, were excavated to subsoil, which occurred between 700mm and 750mm below modern ground level. The trenches were partly excavated by the developers and completed by the writer when archaeological material was noted.
The very fragmentary remains of a tiny part of a stone-footed building with an internal clay floor and some external cobbling were uncovered. The associated pottery was of types datable to no closer than the 13th to 16th centuries.
