In connection with the mechanical excavation of a gas-pipe trench by Bord Gáis for the Newbridge-Kildare Gas Feeder Pipeline, archaeological monitoring was carried out on a stretch of the proposed line in late 1997.
Possible traces of the 'Race of the Black Pig' were found in the Curragh townland near Ballymany roundabout. The work was postponed until early 1998 because of inclement weather conditions. No material of archaeological significance was found in the course of this phase of monitoring.
Arrangements were made to carry out excavations in early 1998 at the location in Collaghknock Glebe townland where the pipeline will intersect the 'Race of the Black Pig' and at the other potential site on the Curragh near Ballymany roundabout where a further trace of that ancient road may occur.
