As a result of the findings from the assessment of Site 2 (see Excavations 1997, No. 261), the five adjoining sites which were also to be developed were examined to determine whether archaeological material survived.
Nineteen trenches were excavated between 11 and 13 November 1997, using a JCB equipped with a toothless bucket. Medieval features, deposits and finds again occurred in all trenches excavated and showed the same pattern as uncovered in Site 2, i.e. possible structures at the north and south ends of the sites with cultivation furrows in between. The features and deposits survived to different degrees owing to erosion on the higher slopes and deposition of soil on the lower-lying areas. Discussions regarding the proposed development are ongoing at the time of writing.
Funding was provided by the developers.
