Archaeological monitoring was carried out at a development site at 31 Duke Street, Athy, on various dates from 21 April to 15 May 1997, in compliance with a condition within the grant of planning permission. The site had been tested in August 1995 and some archaeological deposits were identified in a localised area at the northern end of the site (Excavations 1995, 42–3).
During the course of monitoring, further archaeological layers were identified south-west of the deposits identified in 1995 and clearly formed a continuation of this localised area of archaeology. These layers existed 0.8m beneath the present ground surface at 58.165m OD and continued to a depth of 0.4m. They extended for a distance of 4.5m north-south along the line of the foundation trench but no sensible structural patterns were discernible within them.
No further deposits or features of archaeological interest were uncovered during the course of the work.
