Excavation was undertaken over a two-week period in May 1996. This season saw completion of the excavation of the round hut, completion of the excavation of the annex to a structure excavated in 1993, and the opening of machine trenches across agricultural features associated with the medieval farm.
The total excavated area of the hut site measured a maximum of 6.1m north-south by 8.3m east-west. The hut measured 3.5m in diameter internally. A pathway led to the door of the hut, which was located at the south-east. A stone-kerbed hearth was placed slightly off-centre within the structure. Radiocarbon determinations from the occupation levels of the hut have yielded a date in the late 8th/early 9th century.
Editor's note: This excavation, though carried out in 1996, was not reported on in time for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
