Pre-development testing was undertaken on the site of a proposed extension to the Super-Valu Supermarket in Tuam, Co. Galway, in August 1997. The proposed development is located within the designated archaeological zone for Tuam.
Five test-trenches were excavated within the existing Super-Valu carpark. It became clear at an early stage that over 1m of fill had been dumped on the site to make up the existing carpark level, as a second layer of tarmac was uncovered at a depth of approximately 1m. Numerous existing water and sewer pipes were also uncovered, some at a depth of over 2m.
No archaeological features or small finds were recovered from any of the test-trenches.
