The proposed development site is located on the south side of Bishop Street in the centre of Tuam town. The site of Teampall na Scríne, alias Templenascreen—'the church of the Shrine'—is believed to be located some 15–20m to the west of the proposed development site, which appears to lie within the enclosure of this church site.
Ten test-trenches were excavated by machine. A number of features were found cut into the natural silty gravel. The fill of all these features consisted entirely of modern rubble and brick. No features or small finds of archaeological importance were recovered from any of the trenches.
The site in the past was used as a vegetable garden and a builder's yard. These recent uses may account for the features cut into the natural which were uncovered during testing.
