Pre-development testing in the form of trial-trenching was carried out on 23 June 1997 in compliance with planning conditions for the construction of a commercial store. The site would have been located within the original medieval town defences of Loughrea; indeed, the proposed location of the store was within 3m of the line of the town wall, in the north-east corner of the original settlement. A ditch located just outside the line of the town wall is the remains of a water-filled fosse, which was also part of the defences.
One trench, excavated by machine, revealed a layer of gravel laid down recently, below which was found a modern fill consisting of the remains of a recent bonfire. Below the fill were found largely undisturbed light brown subsoil and blue/grey boulder clay, located at 1–1.3m below the surface.
No archaeology was encountered during the testing at this site.
