Three test-trenches were excavated after the relatively modern office building known as Dundrum Castle House had been demolished. The site is immediately west of Dundrum Castle. The earliest historical and archaeological evidence for a castle on this site dates to the mid-13th century and the site has been in fairly continuous occupation since that time. Pictorial evidence shows a walled garden with some outbuildings in the area of the proposed development in the 18th century.

Each trench was excavated to natural undisturbed boulder clay and no archaeologically significant structures, features or deposits were uncovered.

No further archaeological work is required in advance of development of the apartments; however, landscaping works in the immediate vicinity of the castle will be monitored by a licensed archaeologist in 1998.
