An archaeological assessment was carried out at 1–2 White Friars Place, Dublin 2, on 30 June 1997. Examination of the site was based on three mechanically excavated test-trenches opened inside the footprints of the recently demolished buildings. The site is located to the north of St Peter's Church and immediately to the south of the Carmelite monastery which was mentioned as St Mary's Priory in 1275.
There was no evidence for any archaeological deposits or features from the three trenches opened. Later monitoring of substructural works on 23 October 1997 revealed no evidence of an archaeological nature. In March 1996 two vacant sites at the Carmelite monastery directly opposite this development site were tested by Margaret Gowen (Excavations 1996, 33, 96E014). No archaeological soils or features were recovered. Additional testing and monitoring of construction work carried out in November 1996 and from January to March 1997 did not reveal anything of archaeological significance.
