An archaeological assessment involving the mechanical excavation of four test-trenches was undertaken at the request of the Office of Public Works, to facilitate building contract documentation. The development involved the construction of temporary office accommodation in the grounds of the Ordnance Survey Office. The site is situated south-west of Mountjoy House, which was built by Luke Gardiner in the early 18th century and is currently occupied by administrative and professional staff of the OS.

No archaeologically significant features or deposits were located. A blackware sherd and a clay pipe stem fragment were recovered from loose clay below the topsoil. They represent the only indication of 18th-century activity and are probably related to the construction and occupation of Mountjoy House. Boulder clay occurred at between 0.6m and 0.8m below modern ground level.
