Development for an extension to the hotel and carpark areas was monitored from 22 October. The area had been used as a dump from the early 18th century. A cavern was found during the clearance, and this void contained the bones of a minimum of three horses, one of which was a particularly large individual, quite possibly a dray-horse. The cavern was set back into the natural boulder clays and gravels, forming a scarp, and is most likely a natural feature which was enhanced by man. This opinion was confirmed by members of the Geological Survey who visited the site to inspect the cave. Finds made within the cavern dated from the 18th century.
