Archaeological assessment of a proposed development included the mechanical excavation of four test-trenches. The development involved the preservation of a listed building (No. 60), the reconstruction of No. 61 and the construction of two further buildings to the rear. The trenches were located on the site of the demolished No. 61 and in the area to the rear. No. 61 had a basement and there were brick cellars to the rear of Nos 60 and 61.

The development of Mountjoy Square was begun by Lord Mountjoy (Luke Gardiner II) in 1792. The SMR for the Dublin County Borough shows Mountjoy Square contained within a subtriangle formed by sites classified as 'roads'. It does not record any other pre-1700 archaeological remains in the vicinity of the site.

Boulder clay occurred at approximately 3m below modern ground level. A naturally occurring layer of brown clay and stones was stratified above the boulder clay outside the area of the basement and cellars. Modern fill overlay this deposit to a depth of about 1m. No features or deposits pre-dating the present structures on the site were revealed.
