A programme of archaeological testing was carried out at 4–5 Lincoln Place, Dublin 2, in July 1997. As the planning permission required that a minimum of three trenches be cut prior to any construction works taking place on the site, it was decided to position three trenches to the front of the building and a final trench extending north-south to the rear. All these trenches were manually excavated to a minimum depth of 2m in the trenches to the front of the building and to a minimum depth of 1.2m to the rear.
The stratigraphy was remarkably consistent throughout the site, with evidence of extensive cellaring apparent. This cellaring was cut into the natural deposits and thus would have interfered with any archaeological contexts which might have survived in the areas exposed.
There was no indication of either archaeological deposits or artefacts apparent anywhere on the site. Thus this site may be considered to be archaeologically resolved.
