Archaeological assessment of the proposed development of a new wing for the National Gallery at the above site included the mechanical excavation of five trial-trenches. Natural clays occurred at approximately 1.5m below the level of the adjoining footpath. All deposits stratified above the clays were associated with 18th- or 19th-century developments. The basements of the buildings which had fronted onto Clare Street were dug into the natural clays. There was no evidence for archaeologically significant stratigraphy in any of the trenches.
