An archaeological assessment of a residential and commercial development, which has been granted planning permission by Dublin Corporation, took place. The development is within the zone of archaeological potential of Dublin City. The earliest evidence for settlement in this part of the city dates to the 9th century, when Ostmantown was founded; this area has been continuously occupied since that time. The site is bounded by the Incorporated Law Society to the south and Collins Barracks to the west.
Nine test-trenches were excavated after the relatively modern industrial units that formerly occupied the site had been demolished. The test-trenches revealed that up to 2m of fill material had been dumped on the site in the 18th and 19th centuries in order to create a level platform for development.
No further archaeological work was recommended in advance of development.
