Following an EIS for this development, test-trenching was required by the planning permission granted by Dublin Corporation. The development comprised approx. 450 dwelling units on 16ha, adjoining the grounds of Beaumont Hospital.

Sixteen trenches sampled the general location of the blocks of houses. The stratigraphy was shown to be fairly consistent throughout, comprising a grey-brown topsoil which overlay an orange-brown clay, flecked with charcoal. The depth of these layers varied depending on the location. The underlying natural material was a stiff grey stony clay which tended towards gravel in places.

There was no evidence for the survival of archaeological layers or features. Monitoring of the building work has been carried out subsequently.
