During the intertidal survey in the north of Strangford Lough, a dark layer containing medieval pottery was observed eroding out of a sea cliff on Rough Island, just above the high-water mark.
A small trench, 4m x 1m, was excavated to ascertain the nature and extent of the layer. Whilst rich in glazed 13th-century pottery, no structures or obvious deposits of midden material, such as shells, were found.
