An environmental impact assessment survey was carried out in advance of a proposed car-ferry development on the beach at Magilligan Point. This included a probe survey and remote sensing using a metal-detector.

Nothing of archaeological significance was revealed by the former but the latter produced evi-dence of World War II beach defences in the form of barbed wire and other debris. Two large areas of concentrated metal were ascertained, from local knowledge, to be the buried remains of two World War II DUKWs. These were amphibious vehicles made by the General Motors Corporation and used widely by the Allies. No other features of interest were encountered.
