It was planned to construct a commercial dwelling on the corner of Parnell Street and River Lane, an area within Ennis's zone of archaeological potential. Four trenches were opened by machine and, once the uppermost levels of debris were removed, the trenches were cleaned by hand using shovels and hoes. A number of layers and wall foundations were uncovered but none were older than the early 18th century and most belonged to the 19th century. The remains found represent the western expansion of Ennis. The basal layer sitting on the natural sediments was very like the 'garden soils' encountered on medieval sites in Dublin, although this layer contained late 18th-century pottery fragments.
