In October 1997, archaeological monitoring of ground disturbance associated with engineers' site investigation works at Mill Road, Ennis, was carried out. In the course of monitoring the mechanical excavation of five trial-trenches, structural remains were revealed in one of them, almost directly under present ground level. The remaining four trenches did not yield any material of archaeological significance as they contained redeposited modern material and natural, undisturbed soil layers.
The structural remains recovered in Trench 3 consisted of a poorly preserved stone wall and a more substantial foundation of stone and mortar construction. These features may be associated with an earlier mill building known to have occupied the site, which would date the remains at the latest to the mid-19th century.
