Archaeological test-trenching was carried out on the site of a proposed extension to the existing An Óige Hostel at Glendalough, Co. Wicklow, and on the site of a new 'percolation field' for the septic tank system attached to it. The assessment was undertaken to fulfil a condition of the planning permission for the scheme. The site lies within the designated area of SMR nos 2–16 in the townland of Seven Churches or Camaderry, and is located immediately adjacent to Our Lady's Church.

Four trenches were opened on the site. The sod was removed mechanically using a JCB, while the subsoil surface was exposed by hand. The longest trench crossed the proposed percolation field on the south of the site.

Despite the close proximity of the proposed site to the Glendalough complex, no archaeological soils or features were revealed. Previous inspection of engineering test-pits opened in March 1996 suggested an absence of archaeological activity. Although archaeological activity associated with the monument evidently does not extend onto this site, further monitoring during construction works was recommended.
