The development of government offices on the south side of Anne Street, Wexford, necessitated this assessment. The site was to have intensive piled foundations and, as it was in an area of reclaimed land towards the old shoreline, it was necessary to test for revetments or quay structures. The site was developed in two phases, and archaeological resting took place before each construction phase began.
In the more westerly site (Phase 1) three test-trenches were excavated on 19 March to depths in excess of 3.5m. Subsoil was not encountered. Deposits appeared to be unstructured riverine silts, some of which were organic and contained wood and leather. A ship's timber was recovered from one of these test-trenches. The Phase 2 part of the development will take place in 1997.
