As part of the conditions of planning permission, archaeological testing was carried out on the site on 13 July 1996.
The site was located on the north-west side of the town, approximately 80m east of the thirteenth-century castle.
Two test-pits were dug by mechanical excavator in the area of a proposed petrol tank in the south-west quadrant of the site. Rock occurred within 0.2–0.3m of the existing ground surface in both pits. The moat surrounding the thirteenth-century castle to the east also shows that rock occurs very close to the surface. No evidence of archaeological strata was recorded from the test-pits.
