The excavation took place in advance of the proposed extension to the west of the Theatre Royal, The Mall, Waterford.
A portion of the city wall was excavated, and an adjoining cellar at the north. An entrance to the cellar had left an arched doorway broken through the wall. A medieval stone-lined cesspit was excavated, and of particular interest was a stone revetting wall 2m in front of the city wall, built on the old marsh that existed prior to the infilling which created The Mall. This was a possible landing stage or early quay wall.
