The site lies immediately south-east of Nenagh and within the zone of archaeological potential. Site assessment took place prior to a proposed development.
Nine trenches were excavated down to natural (average depth 2m) to the south of the existing friary. Skeletal material was recovered from the base of the trenches at the north end of the site and would appear to be of a late date. The majority of the trenches revealed the presence of subsurface walls throughout the site. It is not possible at this stage to ascertain whether these walls are medieval or later in date, although a sherd of late medieval pottery was retrieved from Trench 4.
Historical research, combined with the high incidence of subsurface walls, indicates that the majority of the buildings associated with the friary lie to the south of the existing friary, and further work will be carried out in 1997 in order to gain a clearer picture.
