Trenches were cut by machine in a large field to the north of the walled gardens beside Modreeny Castle. Topographic irregularities were caused by outcropping bedrock and quarries for silt subsoil. All features encountered were post-medieval (with the possible exception of a mill lade). The suspected medieval town is elsewhere.
