An archaeological impact assessment was carried out by Archaeological Development Services Ltd on 28 August 1996 at the Rooftop Restaurant extension, Wine Street carpark, Sligo, in advance of redevelopment. Three machine- and hand-dug trenches revealed an overburden of post-medieval/modern fill up to 1m in depth across the site. Below this, archaeological soils of mixed origin, up to 0.3m deep, covered a discontinuous layer of light grey lime-rich soil. This layer appeared to constitute a significant archaeological horizon. However, no definitive dating evidence nor any clues as to its origin was recovered from it. It was cut in a number of places by later pits and gullies, one of which may be the remains of an original plot division.
