An archaeological site assessment was carried out in August 1996 by Archaeological Development Services in advance of development at Market Street in Sligo. This took the form of hand-excavation of two m2 holes, dug in preparation for the insertion of a series of piles. These pits revealed an original floor surface which contained evidence of occupation in the form of animal bone, charcoal and crushed seashell. No direct dating evidence was retrieved. However, a posthole noted in one of the sections was outlined in well-formed iron pan, suggesting a considerable age.
