At the request of the owner, the site was visited on 5 April 1996 to inspect works being undertaken. It must be noted that there was no archaeological constraint on the planning permission for the development, but the sensitivity of the High Street area had previously been pointed out to the architects by ADS.

The ground level was lowered by some 2m at the east and 1m at the west. The north and south sections revealed archaeological strata, probably post-medieval in date, extending the full 50m length of exposure, with one or two earlier pits or gullies dug into the natural boulder clay. In effect the work on the site thus far had completely destroyed much of the archaeological evidence, leaving only a partial record in the sections. However, surviving archaeological remains, fronting onto High Street itself, are still intact.
