An archaeological assessment was carried out in advance of a proposed development at Abbey Street, Sligo, during September 1996. Four machine-cut trenches were excavated under archaeological supervision. These revealed the presence of a number of gullies and large pits cut into undisturbed natural. Some deposits at the southern end of the site appeared to be in situ occupation soils. Historical records suggest that the site is located in the south-east corner of the precinct associated with the nearby Holy Cross Abbey, and as such the archaeology uncovered was significant.
An archaeological excavation is planned for 1997 to investigate the archaeology revealed by the assessment, and in advance of development.
