The foundations of a house had been dug and poured prior to carrying out the archaeological assessment. I was requested by the OPW to test-trench the site in order to determine whether the building works had cut through any archaeological features. A 1.5m-wide trench was dug by machine parallel to the two sides and rear wall of the house. Another trench was dug from the house to the in situ septic rank. Mottled brown soil up to 0.3m deep was recorded below the sod layer. This overlay a layer of undisturbed natural subsoil, 0.6–0.7m thick, which rested on limestone. Test-trenches produced no evidence of archaeology.
