In compliance with the recommendations of the National Monuments Service to Monaghan UDC, a programme of archaeological testing was carried out on a site at Market Road, Monaghan, in June 1996.

Two intersecting trenches were mechanically opened to test the fill extent of the site, and in both cases were dug to reveal the underlying natural deposits. In both cuttings these deposits consisted of natural silts, days and gravel and were exposed to a maximum depth of almost 5m. A length of walling extending from the west towards the east in the southwestern corner of the site was exposed to foundation level. It was datable to the mid-/late- eighteenth century by the occurrence of glass and pottery in the foundation trench, and was the earliest feature recovered in the course of testing. It is recommended that the development programme should respect this wall. Otherwise, no archaeological features or artefacts were revealed, and in no case were deposits of archaeological significance encountered.
