Archaeological investigation took place at a site located at Market Road/Dawson Street, Monaghan. Five trenches were mechanically opened, and all were dug to reveal the underlying natural deposits. In the eastern area of the site a layer of peat was identified overlying two distinct marl deposits, while in the western area these marl deposits were replaced by deposits of sand. These natural deposits suggest that the eastern portion of the site was at one time a lake. The surface deposits were composed of building debris associated with recent activity on the site, including drains, culverts and sewerage pipes. No archaeological features or artefacts were revealed and in no cases were deposits of archaeological significance encountered.
