Archaeological investigation took place at a site located at Glaslough Street, Monaghan, on behalf of Monaghan Urban District Council. Three trenches were mechanically opened to a sufficient depth to reveal the natural deposits. There was some variation in the nature and composition of these deposits across the length and breadth of the site. In the south-eastern corner of the site the basal deposits consisted mainly of a natural silty sand, which changed to a black peaty clay towards the north and north-western end of the site, close to the edge of the lake. In all cases the upper layers proved to be much disturbed, with much modern debris and domestic refuse at all levels in the area towards the south-east and a well-cultivated ploughsoil or garden soil elsewhere. No archaeological features or artefacts were revealed and in no cases were deposits of archaeological significance encountered.
