Archaeological investigation took place at a site located at 16 Dublin Street, Monaghan. The area under investigation is located to the rear of the Shamrock Bar and had a small block-built boiler-house which was demolished prior to commencement of testing. Two trenches were cut in line with the proposed foundation trenches given the small size of the site, only 5m wide and less than 8m long.
The stratigraphy of Trench 1 reflects the disturbance caused by the boiler-house. The deposits consist primarily of dumped domestic refuse, with two attempts at creating a working surface, although these surfaces were severely damaged by subsequent dumping.
These working surfaces were more clearly defined in Trench 2, comprising two buried layers of rough brick and stone cobbling. The lower layer is associated with a stone foundation wall, which itself overlies a brick setting cut into the natural deposits. The purpose of this brick setting is not immediately apparent. The wall overlying this setting appears to be the remains of the rear foundation wall of a previous structure. In both trenches the underlying material was exposed to reveal a layer of boulder day overlying shattered limestone.
It is clear from the stratigraphy that since the structures and surfaces all postdate the brick flooring, there were no deposits of archaeological significance present.
