In compliance with the recommendations of the National Monuments Service, a programme of archaeological testing was carried out on the above site during November 1996.

A single linear trench was mechanically opened from west to east along the full length of the site, together with a second lateral trench extending from north to south. Both trenches were opened to a sufficient depth to reveal the natural undisturbed deposits.

There was a slight variation in the nature and composition of these natural deposits across the length and width of the site. To the west, they consisted mainly of a layer of dark grey silt underlying deep layers of intense disburbance at every point, while to the east the lowest deposits consisted of a layer of peat, which at its eastern extremity was seen to overlie a basal layer of white marl.

In the lateral trench to the south the peat deposits gave way to natural layers of very loose sand extending to the base of the cutting. These findings were quite consistent with the results of previous testings on sites to the north of the Shambles River carried out over the past twelve months.

No archaeological features or arefacts were revealed and in no case were deposits of archaeological significance encountered.
