Archaeological investigation took place at a site located at Dawson Street/Dublin Road, Monaghan. Historical and cartographic sources indicated the possibility of a castle being located within the area of Dawson Street, south of the existing Diamond.
A series of three trenches were mechanically opened to test all available areas of the site, and in all cases trenches were dug to reveal the underlying natural deposits. In each cutting these natural deposits consisted of a deep, well-established layer of peat or turf, which was cutthrough to reveal the underlying marl in two of the trenches. In all areas the deposits directly beneath the surface consisted of recent material which was consistent with the site's previous use as a wood-yard.
No archaeological features or artefacts were revealed and in no cases were deposits of archaeological significance encountered.
